STEM Camps

No age is too young to start learning more about cybersecurity. Summer Cyber STEM camps for middle school students are held throughout the state, using hands-on activities to investigate topics like cryptography, password cracking, and geotagging. These camps are led by college cybersecurity faculty and provide a great introduction to cybersecurity.

The Cyber STEM Summer Camps strive to be part of the solution to the nation’s shortfall of skilled cybersecurity professionals. Ensuring that enough young people are inspired to utilize their talents in cybersecurity is critical to the future of our country’s national and economic security as we become even more reliant on cyber-based technology in every aspect of our daily lives.

Find area-specific information below about the Cyber STEM Summer Camps in your desired locations (no experience required). Depending on location, the camps range from programming in scratch or Python, to electronics and networking, to basic command-line operation of computers. All while adding at least a dash of cybersecurity.

Apply to Host a 2026 STEM Camp

There’s still time to apply to host a 2026 Cyber STEM Camp! These summer camps provide cybersecurity and computing education to Montana middle school students and are supported by funding from CyberMontana.

STEM camps are typically week-long day camps and are often hosted by local colleges. Camp hosts provide a venue for their camp and are responsible for securing instructors and staffing.

CyberMontana makes hosting a camp achievable through several layers of optional support. We provide up to $15,000 in funding to cover expenses associated with running a camp. Camp hosts may also choose to receive curriculum guidance from cybersecurity experts at Missoula College or may develop and deliver their own curriculum independently.

Additionally, CyberMontana staff can offer optional guidance on advertising, registration, and feature participating camps alongside others on the CyberMontana website; however, camp hosts often opt to manage their own outreach, registration, and promotion.

Applications to host a STEM camp are due by February 13, 2026. To see more details about STEM camps and access the application, navigate to the STEM camp webpage. If you have any questions, contact Kristal Crowley at kristal.crowley@mso.umt.edu.

With the digital world at our fingertips at nearly all times, cybersecurity knowledge is essential for Montanans of all ages. We're helping students ages 11-14 learn about cybersecurity early through our NSA Sponsored GenCyber Summer Institute.

Students will participate in a variety of cybersecurity exercises that will teach both the foundation of computer security, as well as the basics of technology. This cybersecurity camp is geared to expose students to the world of technology. It promotes a basic understanding of computer security and engenders a passion for technology and engineering concepts in the future.

The objectives of the camp include:
  • Foster interest and enthusiasm in technology
  • Teach the fundamentals of offense and defense in cybersecurity
  • Work with embedded devices
