GenCyber: Teacher Program 2025

Join teachers from around the state at Missoula College for a free professional development opportunity focused on foundational cybersecurity content to incorporate into your classroom practices and curriculum. A 40-hour in-person workshop will be held July 14 – July 18, 2025. An additional 25 hours of online activities will be held in June, September, and October 2025.

Program Highlights Include:

  1. Engaging Cybersecurity Topics Learn and teach the 7 essential GenCyber concepts: Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability (the CIA Triad), Defense in Depth, Thinking Like an Adversary, Simplicity in Security, and Computer Ethics.
  2. Hands-On Experience Participate in interactive, real-world cybersecurity activities using the Montana Cyber Range, including social network security, phishing, cryptography, web security, reconnaissance, and cyber defense strategies.
  3. Curriculum Development Guidance Receive expert assistance and a wealth of online resources to help you develop, refine, and integrate cybersecurity and privacy concepts into your own lesson plans and existing district curricula.
  4. Explore the ITS 130 Curriculum Dive deep into the University of Montana’s high school dual enrollment course, ITS 130 – Essential Cybersecurity, with guided walkthroughs and collaborative discussions to enhance your teaching toolkit and consider content for your district.
  5. Certification Support Access the optional TestOut Security+ course and receive a voucher to take the Security+ certification exam, supporting your professional development and credentials.
  6. Capture the Flag (CTF) Challenge Apply your new skills and connect with peers by participating in a friendly, skills-based CTF competition this fall.
  7. Cultural Integration Learn from the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) about incorporating Indian Education for All (IEFA) into your cybersecurity curriculum, ensuring culturally responsive and inclusive teaching.

About the Program

This free professional development opportunity is offered by Missoula College, an NSA-recognized Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense. The GenCyber program is a national initiative funded by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation to increase cybersecurity awareness and career opportunities for middle and high school students. GenCyber also facilitates teacher readiness within the teacher learning community to learn, develop, and deliver cybersecurity content for middle and high school classrooms.

Additional Benefits:

  1. CyberMontana will provide travel and meal assistance to participants from outside the Missoula area.
  2. Participants will earn a $1,000 phased stipend upon completion of the program.
  3. Free lunch and snacks provided by UM Dining throughout the entire camp.
  4. Participants receive 65 professional development units from the Montana Office of Public Instruction.
  5. Participants may optionally receive 3 UM graduate credits in education.
  6. Participants will receive no-cost access to the Montana Cyber Range, the HackTheBox platform,  and the CompTIA TestOut platform, with the option of receiving a no-cost voucher for the CompTIA Security+ certification exam.
